The annual BC High School Chess League consists of two stages: district qualifiers and a culminating provincial championship. Schools from each district will compete in a regional tournament, where the winning team(s) will advance to the BC High School Chess Championships with a chance to become the BC High School Champion! Last year’s champion was Lord Byng Secondary School.
Each school must form a team of 5 players in order to compete.

Qualifier Format

6 rounds (if fewer than 7 teams, a round-robin format will be used)

15+5 time control (15 minutes with a 5-second increment)

Scoring
Each team’s win over another team will be worth 1 match point, a draw 0.5 match points, and a loss 0 points. At the conclusion of the qualifier, total match points will determine the final standings.

In the event of a tie, the following tiebreaks will apply in order:

Total game points scored by all players on the tying teams.

Head-to-head result between the teams.
-
3+2 Blitz playoff, if the tie persists.

How to Sign Up

Receive permission from your sponsor teacher or the teacher in charge of your school's chess club

Registration opens on December 1st, 2025. Sign up using the Google Form linked to the button at the top of the page.

If your school does not fall under one of the districts or you are unsure about which one it falls under, please contact us.

Your team must have submitted the payment by January 19th.

EARLY BIRD FEE (Paid before 11:59 pm December 22th): $25

REGULAR FEE (Paid before 11:59 pm February 2nd): $30

Any registrations after February 2nd must be approved by the High School League Coordinator via email (bcjrchess@gmail.com). An additional fee of $10 may be charged for late registrations.

Your team’s roster must be finalized AT LEAST ONE WEEK before the day of the qualifiers (it is recommended you find a substitute in case a player falls ill).

Refund policy
We understand that due to extenuating circumstances, teams may need to withdraw from the tournament. However, due to the time and associated costs that come with running our qualifiers, we will only be providing refunds for a team if notified at least a week in advance of the qualifier.
