WHO ARE WE?
Connecting Youth Through Chess
The BCJCA is a student-run non-profit organization that aims to promote a more connected youth chess community in British Columbia.
Throughout the past two years, we have organized many tournaments and events across BC, including the BC High School Chess Championships. Open to all secondary schools and high schools in BC, the team-based tournament consists of both in-person regional qualifiers and a final provincial championship. Last year, we saw a total of 37 schools participate across 9 districts. In addition to the High School Championships, we also host seasonal rapid tournaments open to anyone under 18 years of age; our past two tournaments each hosted over 80 participants.
Our After-School Chess program connects local high schools with elementary schools, involving over 30 volunteer instructors and more than 150 students across 6 elementary schools. Lead instructors design student-led lessons, providing both high school and elementary students with the opportunity to actively participate in the chess community.
Currently, we have over 75 clubs represented from all across the Lower Mainland and more than 300 members in our community, whom we connect with through our website, our Discord server, and social media. In the future, we hope to further support the creation of chess clubs at schools, continue to host regular tournaments, and expand our After-School Chess program.

Join Our Team!
We're excited to announce that we are expanding our membership system to make volunteering more accessible and offer lower commitment roles, but still able to access the BCJCA network. As a result, we are expanding our organization to include a new class of membership called a "General Member". These positions are open to anyone. No application process or fees required, filling out a registration form is sufficient. Becoming a "General Member", or "Member", grants you ccess to member-only part of server where you can view volunteering opportunities, contribute to BCJCA’s various initiatives, and access resources like meeting minutes. Similar to becoming a member of BCCF. These members are non-voting members, which means that they do not take part in the governance of BCJCA. Should you wish to have a say in the governance of BCJCA, you are still able to apply to become a voting or governing member, which is basically equivalent to previous executives.
Roles
General Member (aka “member” for short)

General members do NOT have a say in the organization’s governance (eg they cannot make decisions at meetings or vote at the AGM).
Voting Member/Governing Member

General members who are in good standing and would like to be promoted to a more involved role can become a voting member by application or appointment

Voting members are defined as participating BCJCA members that have a say in the organisation’s governance.

Voting members have a responsibility to attend any general meeting to vote and contribute responsibly to group discussions and decisions

Only voting members and above can run for elections or be appointed as executives
Jr. Executive

Consists of “coordinator” level roles: League Coordinator, Rapid Coordinator, ASC Coordinator, Marketing Manager, Web Manager, and any deputy coordinators
